What exactly is being depicted on that cover? Is the old guy being drowned by the standing up guy?
The guy under water is a dead gold prospector (Jeff “Whitey” Whittiker) who has been murdered by a claim jumper (legs and hands visible on the cover). The story starts with the unnamed claim jumper murdering Whitey, who wakes up realising he’s dead. The rest of the story revolves around a variety of unsuccessful attempts by the claim jumper to bury Whitey. You can probably work out the ending yourself…
