I think this is pretty fair review. I liked the book, and liked all three parts of Seveneves, but part three, the after 5000 years part, reads like it is simply unfinished: there are too many unresolved issues (e.g., the Purpose) and the ending seems rushed (though that has usually been a problem with Stephenson, never more so than in Snow Crash, with Anathem the obvious exception).
I can imagine this as the the first half of a new Baroque Cycle, with Parts I and II as The Hard Rain, Parts III and (unwritten) IV as The Cradle, and (unwritten) Parts V and VI as The Purpose.

Ultimately however, Seveneves offers us more about the rendering of whale fat than the drama of Ahab’s frenzied quest and its impact on those aboard the Pequod.

Now, while discoursing of sperm it behooves to speak of other things akin to it, in the business of preparing the sperm whale for the try-works. First comes white-horse, so called, which is obtained from the tapering part of the fish, and also from the thicker portions of his flukes. It is tough with congealed tendons- a wad of muscle- but still contains some oil. After being severed from the whale, the white-horse is first cut into portable oblongs ere going to the mincer. They look much like blocks of Berkshire marble.
Plum-pudding is the term bestowed upon certain fragmentary parts of the whale’s flesh, here and there adhering to the blanket of blubber, and often participating to a considerable degree in its unctuousness. It is a most refreshing, convivial, beautiful object to behold. As its name imports, it is of an exceedingly rich, mottled tint, with a bestreaked snowy and golden ground, dotted with spots of the deepest crimson and purple. It is plums of rubies, in pictures of citron. Spite of reason, it is hard to keep yourself from eating it. I confess, that once I stole behind the foremast to try it. It tasted something as I should conceive a royal cutlet from the thigh of Louis le Gros might have tasted, supposing him to have been killed the first day after the venison season, and that particular venison season contemporary with an unusually fine vintage of the vineyards of Champagne.
There is another substance, and a very singular one, which turns up in the course of this business, but which I feel it to be very puzzling adequately to describe. It is called slobgollion; an appellation original with the whalemen, and even so is the nature of the substance. It is an ineffably oozy, stringy affair, most frequently found in the tubs of sperm, after a prolonged squeezing, and subsequent decanting. I hold it to be the wondrously thin, ruptured membranes of the case, coalescing.
Gurry, so called, is a term properly belonging to right whalemen, but sometimes incidentally used by the sperm fishermen. It designates the dark, glutinous substance which is scraped off the back of the Greenland or right whale, and much of which covers the decks of those inferior souls who hunt that ignoble Leviathan.
Nippers. Strictly this word is not indigenous to the whale’s vocabulary. But as applied by whalemen, it becomes so. A whaleman’s nipper is a short firm strip of tendinous stuff cut from the tapering part of Leviathan’s tail: it averages an inch in thickness, and for the rest, is about the size of the iron part of a hoe. Edgewise moved along the oily deck, it operates like a leathern squilgee; and by nameless blandishments, as of magic, allures along with it all impurities.
But to learn all about these recondite matters, your best way is at once to descend into the blubber-room, and have a long talk with its inmates. This place has previously been mentioned as the receptacle for the blanket-pieces, when stript and hoisted from the whale. When the proper time arrives for cutting up its contents, this apartment is a scene of terror to all tyros, especially by night. On one side, lit by a dull lantern, a space has been left clear for the workmen. They generally go in pairs,- a pike-and-gaffman and a spade-man. The whaling-pike is similar to a frigate’s boarding-weapon of the same name. The gaff is something like a boat-hook. With his gaff, the gaffman hooks on to a sheet of blubber, and strives to hold it from slipping, as the ship pitches and lurches about. Meanwhile, the spade-man stands on the sheet itself, perpendicularly chopping it into the portable horse-pieces. This spade is sharp as hone can make it; the spademan’s feet are shoeless; the thing he stands on will sometimes irresistibly slide away from him, like a sledge. If he cuts off one of his own toes, or one of his assistants’, would you be very much astonished? Toes are scarce among veteran blubber-room men.
In literature, language itself is the main character.
Yep, it needed to be longer. I’d have liked three parallel lead-in novels for each of the spacers’, pingers’ and miners’ stories. Then tie it together with the coming together and conflict in the 4th book, and the conclusion and set-up for the future in the 5th.
It was a strange book which entertained and annoyed me simultaneously. Gloriously detailed in some aspects and full of holes in others. I kind of liked the Cloud Atlas-ish vibe the “5000 years later” part gave it, but that was definitely the weakest part.
I spent the whole novel waiting for the last red shoe to drop, and it never did.
Stephenson’s books are mostly about ideas rather than characters but I thought Seveneves had a few of Stephenson’s most engaging characters.
The Cory Doctorow story mentioned at the end of the first paragraph is “The Man Who Sold the Moon” (not “World”).
You know I’ve never read moby dick? Given that my musical group sings songs about whaling I probably should.

Spot-on. I can forgive Neal Stephenson anything after The Diamond Age, but damn. Seveneves was not at all on par with what I was expecting and hoping for when I pick up a book with his name on it.
I agree with the mixed feelings, Seveneves was a lot of fun, but was not exactly great.
I kind of pacified myself on the weak characters with the idea that they were literally representatives of their respective groups, on both sides of the 50,000 year gap. It’s almost “using archetypes” in the same way naming Hiro Protagonist worked. I don’t entirely buy it, but it at lest makes things acceptable.
I loved the parallels and possible nods to other fiction (Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars, which is still the finest of its kind, Larry Niven’s The Smoke Ring /The Integral Trees, the more recent Battlestar Galactica, etc.). I was not so pleased with the ham-handed girlpolitick-as-a-proxy-for-the-mystical-feminine routine (sweetie), or the increasingly implausible energy density in the robots.
I also covet more things in the setting.
Humanity is overrated anyway.
Especially Neal Stephenson.
I’m in the middle of part 2, administered via audiobook. That method’s working out pretty well because if I fall asleep during a passage, I just take that as automatic post-publication editing and carry on when I wake up.
Ouch! I will say however, that the review mirrors my experience with Cryptonomicon. I quit reading about half way through because the characters were so cold and inhuman and I ultimately had no interest in them.
Really? “The Man Who Sold The Moon” is also a famous old Heinlein story. I’ll have to check out Cory’s version.

I never would have guessed that you would say that.
Maybe it’s because I’ve re-read Anathem too many times, but I felt there was way too much recycling from the space journey there - orbital mechanics can only go so far as entertainment. And both Docs’ internal monologue put me right back into ReamDe’s Dodge. When I came across the Empennage reference, I started to wonder “who’s he got a bet with about mentioning certain words in every book?”
Still, delightful, and I’ve already read it twice, but in general I feel like he’s not sympathetic to/empathetic enough with his characters, putting them through all kinds of things just to move the plot along, in this case to reduce the population and bring about the end-game. Incoming rocks are the deus ex machina this time around.
In some ways, the ratio of character development to story is better in the way-back Stephen Bury collaborations. And of course Snow Crash.
