I remember there was one where the ghoul turned out to be a corrupt traffic cop who throughout was a pretty friendly guffawing hillbilly type (even at the point when they took the mask off) but then it quickly turned into a scowl and in a Russian accent he said “My masters will not be pleased!”

The wonderful thing about the omnipresent pop-cult references in SDMI is that, unlike LOST, they fit the theme. If they weren’t germane to the local story or over-arching plot, they were part of the whole “we’re about pop-cult references” which worked.

SPOILER ALERT: and when they finally started killing off characters it was for reasons of plot, not because the writers couldn’t come up with a way to resolve the character’s convoluted thread.
