One of my favorite novels, period. I used to assign stretches of it to my fiction classes when teaching sections on lyric prose. In some ways the whole novel is a sustained tone poem, and one of the saddest, most beautiful books you’ll ever read. This is what fantasy is capable of at the top of its form. Can’t recommend it enough.
