I’d never give my mom an appliance as a gift, unless she specifically asked for one.

Damn right! She may be from 1936, but anyone so much hinting at mentioning positions like “a woman’s place is in the kitchen” etc can expect a nice but firm talking to about how this is utter bullshit.
