so messed up
Getting better in some places, hope forces will be pulled back soon in other cities.
I truly hope the next reasonably human president takes steps to dissolve DHS once and for all. I believe it was created simply as a equivalent to the Gestapo, to bypass the rules about spying on Americans and turning the military on Americans.
I usually don’t hold with protesting at someone’s home - every rule has an exception. And McConnell earned it.
Not sure where else to post this except here.
Some of the reactions to it are worth considering:
Literally every time
“And I have Black friends!”
My immediate thought in response:
“No, you fucking don’t. You just know some Black people who politely tolerate your ass, probably because they have no real choice in the matter.”
I’ve always appreciated the photo that Colbert used to use while saying that line on the Report, because it very nicely summed up the reciprocity of that relationship in one simple image.
I think a lot of young people are smart enough to notice that their state had hundreds of thousands of votes for Clinton in 2016, while their state’s electoral college votes all went to Trump, effectively making their votes meaningless.
As long as nothing is done to amend that situation, a lot of people, young and old, are going to feel kinda blah about voting.
Yep, that’s the one.
Always handy to have a revenue stream for your secret police.
Wouldn’t be too too shocking if the frame before that didn’t literally say “Black Lives Don’t Matter!”
And they… Have… Black… Friends…
Don’t mind me, still picking my jaw up from the floor where I left it yesterday when I saw this…
They do have a point though, sort of. There is that message that government doesn’t work, and that we don’t understand what it’s like to not have a working government, and that we’re still living off of the investment of the Greatest Generation. But “government doesn’t work, therefore let’s erode the social safety net that your grandparents took for granted” is a Republican talking point. It’s nothing that the average American (who is left of the Democratic center) wants, it’s just something that the Republicans keep pushing down our throats and the cowardly Democrats like Obama keep agreeing to. If Obama has a problem with this, maybe he shouldn’t have actively been a part of it.
As far as government needing a jingle and advertising, I hate to say it but it’s true. Look how Fox Noise and Bookface control our parents, who were once socially conservative but otherwise sane. Why are the Democrats (not the Left, but the Democrats specifically) not fighting against this weaponized ignorance with media offensives of their own? They could easily choose to fight against right wing disinformation, but instead it’s all “lol shallow stupid kids who need advertising and jingles, we’re better than that, when they go low we go high” Yeah, we need a strong media presence, so where the fuck is it?
And “government is us, collectively, making decisions together”? No it fucking isn’t. Just look around you. It isn’t that, it hasn’t been that in my lifetime, and I’m not one of the Millennials or Zoomers they so smugly talk about.
LOL just go vote for a center right Democrat every four years kids, that will solve all your problems. Just look at these fine people who we voted into office only to blame you for what they did, and smugly refuse to help you with your fight for actual justice.
A thousand times, this. We need another series like that “Wake Up” video (or something stronger) played as often as the idealized versions of the government and police people see on TV. There’s plenty of money being spent on fantasy, but where’s the money and energy for something that could transform and improve our reality?
It’s scary to think wealthy strategists for the GOP are controlling the message. I keep wondering what else they might want…to abandon their party, or infiltrate the other side and control it from within? All those Southern Democrats who went Republican…could they be trying to go back? <shudders> If the people (and progressives) don’t take control, they will.
“The Colbert Report” had to hire an actor to play a black person who works on the show.
I had to check that headline twice after reading the content, too. “…Pretty Interesting (And Funny).” No, not funny at all.
