I think this chart is a really useful resource. One of the issues of crossed communication that I strongly suspect often comes up when mentioning police abolition is that people who aren’t familiar with the topic assume a literal interpretation of abolishing the very existence of police rather than abolishing many police powers. To many the top (red) and bottom (green) portion of chart are different kinds of reform, since the bottom portion is not arguing for the complete absence of any policing.

And one of the reasons that people who pay attention are so furious with the fascist character of US law enforcement is that they recognize a need for peace officers while what America has is the opposite.

Feds charge Pittsburgh man, 52, with placing bag full of homemade bombs Downtown, having supplies at home

/—-

“Michanowicz brought a backpack full of homemade Molotov cocktails to downtown Pittsburgh. He wasn’t there to protest; he was there to engage in violent attacks.”

—-
“Authorities searched Michanowicz’s Republic Street home Thursday. They say it turned up a bundle of the same type of fuse as those on the bombs, a can of spray foam and a syringe containing a liquid whose odor was consistent with the bombs.

Investigators also allegedly found 10 more backpacks similar to the bag left Downtown.“

A cardboard tube capped with spray foam on each end? Something tells me that thing wouldn’t be able to create an especially impressive explosion. I wonder if they were stink bombs or something.

Yes, but that’s the cops saying that. It makes the testimony fundamentally untrustworthy.

I’ll take the risk of getting him off the streets until the truth can be determined in a crucible.

Also - it’s highly likely that he was a right wing provocateur.

I was trying to make sense of the “bombs” pictured in the photo accompanying the article. They don’t look like any Molotov cocktails I’ve ever seen.

This is from the WP article on Molotov cocktails:

British Home Guard improvised weapons in Imperial War Museum, London

AFAIK, it just has to have gas or ethanol and an improvised fuse. If I had to guess, what appears to be flammable insulation is to help it burn.

Pushing police abolition as the only possible alternative to the current situation is not going to accomplish much. As far as I know, not country in this whole Earth has abolished their police forces. At best, the police abolition alternative could be used to encourage recalcitrant decision makers to support needed reform measures.

I am also a little weary about white people telling the BLM people that developed 8 can’t wait that their approach is not valid. In my opinion, at this point we need to get behind what black people are asking us to do and not nitpick and poo poo their proposals.

Something tells me than 10k soldiers just in DC alone is gonna barely make a scratch when compared to crowds that are gonna swell up much larger than this over the next week

Hell, 10k soldiers wouldn’t do a thing in a city like Philly either

Looks like a toilet paper tube though. Seems to me that would leak if you filled it with flammable liquid and would be likely to bounce of whatever you threw it at instead of shattering.

Please see my reply to @Wanderfound and the chart he posted above. There’s a failure of comunication in that it’s not total abolition of policing entirely, but such extensive abolition of police powers that it has a chance of transforming it into a fundamentally different institution.

I have no idea if that’s what @Wanderfound is personally advocating, but the chart he posted is pretty straight-forward (albeit incomplete IMO).
