2020 Uprising: Enough is Enough

A bunch of video here. This was last night in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle.

Seems like establishing the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone isn’t such a bad idea given the alternative.

So in today’s edition of “people I was never induced to read in school”, I learned:

I am so tired of waiting,
Aren’t you,
For the world to become good
And beautiful and kind?
Let us take a knife
And cut the world in two -
And see what worms are eating
At the rind.

Anybody else feel like the elision of the second half of Hughes’s poem is part and parcel with the whitewashing of MLK’s legacy?

“Stop treating us like animals and thugs and start treating us with some respect…”

You mean, stop treating you like you treat Black people?

That has got to be the most willfully ignorant, self-centered statement of the month. Wow. The dissonance here is galactic.

To paraphrase Grover Norquist a bit, (well actually borrowing heavily from his infamous quote):
“I don’t want to abolish the police. I just want to reduce them to a size where we can drown them in the bathtub!”

  • Chokeholds were already banned in NYC when a cop choked Eric Garner to death.
  • This is just gonna be the UPS package delivery service loophole but with guns.
  • Bodycams with no penalty for disabling them is a useless transfer of even more money into a stinking trash pile of festering sewage.
  • Demilitarizing the police by “limiting” (not eliminating) the transfer of military equipment is like saying you’re gonna stop flooding the sink by turning of one of the taps.
  • I can’t wait to see how the Dems plan on limiting racial profiling in a police force they don’t even have any direct oversight for, unlike the TSA, where racial profiling is a thing of the pa— sorry I couldn’t get through that with a straight face, this is impossible.
  • Details please. And again, why limit qualified immunity when you could just abolish it?
  • A good start for making a list of people not to hire when we abolish the police. One out of eight isn’t bad I guess?
  • Not sure how this helps reform policing, unless we get to classify cops murdering Black people as lynchings.

Incrementalism!

And for those that aren’t from around here it’s important to explain a little bit about the Capitol Hill neighborhood. It’s young, densely populated, diverse(ish), and mostly upper middle class with a sizeable LGBTQ population. It’s also a counterculture center in the area notable for it being the epicenter of the grunge scene. While the Seattle area is already left leaning, Capitol Hill is especially so. It’s pretty unsurprising that this kind of experiment would take place in that neighborhood.

I’m not so leftist that I think prisons as a whole should be abolished – I think they have their place in society. What I do think needs to be abolished is the entire concept of “for profit” incarceration.

Love the fan responses too, i.e. his famous track “Give the Power Back” or the refrain from “Killing in the Name” that goes "and now I’ll do what they told me…"
