Putin isn’t interested in peace talks. He needs the war to continue to stay in power.

Days before the summons was served, Ekaterina Mizulina, the head of the Safe Internet League, Russia’s internet censorship body, publicly objected to “pro-Ukrainian” videos posted by Mr Minayev to social media. In the clips, Xolidayboy appeared to call himself “Ukrainian” and said the Russian annexation of Crimea had not improved life for Crimeans.

There seems to be some tension between the president (and supreme commander) and the commander-in-chief.

Completely unrelated to the content discussed by both, German media noted that Zaluzhny is very popular throughout military ranks, who allegedly consider him a candidate for a future presidential election.

Long read. Worth it. Another example on how to criticize Israel without falling back to antisemitism.

Brussels was right to recommend that accession talks should begin with Kyiv. But the road ahead will be long and complex

I was chatting with a friend with good connections recently. He said if he was 20 years younger he would be all over starting a business in :ukraine: and that they have the potential to shift the focus of the :eu: to Kyiv. He was very impressed with the tech skills he saw there and their “can do” attitude, with the usual caveats about reining in corruption.

The :eu: process could well be a quick one. Once they allow :ukraine: in, it would no doubt put the right sorts of pressure on :poland: and :hungary: to get their politics less aligned with Moscow.

All current member states must agree to a new country joining the EU. Hungary will veto Ukraine joining if Orbán is still in power.

ETA: Opening negotiations also requires unanimity, and Hungary will veto it.

It might increase that pressure but the current regime in Hungary (Poland looks very subject to imminent changes) would wilfully ignore that pressure. It’s probably hypothetical, anyway, as long as Orbán is in power as @GagHalfrunt notes.
