For those who may be curious. “German measles” is Rubella (the “R” in the MMR vaccine), rather than the “M” measles of the current outbreaks.

Congenital defects and fetal death were the major impetus for vaccinating against a generally benign illness for the population at large (in times past, only women were vaccinated in some areas). Pregnant women are still screened for rubella immunity early in pregnancy.
