A farm in Kansas receives non-stop threats and harassment because of mapping glitch

No, I don’t miss that. Maybe we should talk data fields or significant figures? Reread my entire argument in this thread, and come up with something that makes sense, or I think we’re done here.

ETA: And no, they seem to be pointing to a field, or a driveway. In one default case, out of several. (See the field in Panama)
While they’re also screaming “country” in the other data fields.

user error.

It hardly matters. They are providing untrue data which has real world consequences. Once informed of this they should cease to publish the untrue data.
IANAL and US law may be different, especially given the host of legal systems, but here intention is not important in libel. What matters is damage. In this case these people have suffered significant harm as the result of publication of falsehoods, and it continues. If they have been notified of what they are doing and continue to do so, there should be consequences that will make them stop.

Then we’re back to my original issue - why provide a lat, long if they don’t actually have one (especially if they’re providing a country, separately)? I wouldn’t think it refers to a house because I’ve worked with enough geolocation data to see that their returned information is misleading - but it is misleading.

And yet, if I were manufacturing weed whackers, and it came to my attention that pedicurists were routinely purchasing them for professional use, I might try to come up with some kind of technical fix to prevent finger loss. Yelling at pedicurists only gets you so far.

Like, if I’ve only got country with no further geographical designation, I could return that country’s capital - I’m sure the White House gets enough weird & threatening spam that this would only produce a slight uptick. Plus, it would guarantee secret service attention to anyone who gets threatening!

Alternatively, there are lots of big lakes that you could just give the middle of. It still satisfies the requirement of having a longitude / latitude in country.

I must agree with tropo on this. It is not just returning a point. It is also returning a description of the result. In this case the description says it’s in the United States therefore the coordinate is that of the United States. Even if one takes the geocoordinates as an accurate location the people assaulting the farmers are wrong. According to Google Maps this location is in a field approximately 600’ from the nearest building. It seems that users are assuming the returned coordinates aren’t perfectly accurate otherwise they would be looking in that field.

I wonder if the altitude was supplied along with the lat-long. Would people be digging in that field to retrieve their devices?
