A short history of cops telling women what to wear at the beach

A female friend put it aptly: “The French are defending the principles of personal freedom underpinning European culture, by sh*tting all over them.”

Irony factor: the burkini was invented in Australia, explicitly for the purpose of making it easier for Muslim women to integrate into local beach culture. It was a classical example of tolerant multicultural integration done right.

But, of course, bigoted fuckwits ruin everything.

I find it amusing that people are getting upset about women covering up at the beach. Soon we all will have to cover up to stop from getting sun cancer because most sunscreens are not enough protection.
I would happily wear a burkini if I could find one here. Constantly applying sunscreen is annoying, sun burns are not fun, and it is gross to have various water floatsum out of my hair.

It seems to me the only problem with the burkini is the marketing. If it was marketed as a sun protection beach wear people wouldn’t be as silly about it.

I’ve seen this argument made explicitly. During Quebec’s niqabs-on-public-servants dust up in their last provincial election there was someone who wrote in favour of banning the niqab saying that their Jewish grandfather changed his name and gave up traditional garb when he moved to Canada after fleeing Germany shortly after the Nazi’s won power. I just read it thinking, “You think that racism against German Jews in Canada in the lead up to the second world war was a good thing?”

Rashguard + Surf Leggings. Or any “quick-dry” athletic legging (because for whatever reason if they’re marketed as “surf leggings” they cost 3x more). It’s what I do when I kayak because there’s not much shade in the middle of a lake and I am a pasty mayonnaise woman.

Honestly I’ve never really had much desire to travel to France, but I’d really like to don my kayaking gear and sit on a beach in Nice next to some Muslim women in solidarity. Telling women “you’re wearing too many clothes, take some off” is so so gross.

Does the Vatican even have rush hour?

My gran, who is profoundly non-religious, wouldn’t be seen dead outside without a scarf protecting her wave & set. She’d have no truck with some bossy copper telling her what to do with her headgear I tell you what. It’d be worth taking her to france just to see her hit them with her handbag.

The Daily Mirror had the story over here today, so I hope they’ve got deep pockets.

You’re probably thinking of these guys. They’re ALWAYS Russian.

I read that beach-frolicking nuns and Catholic women wearing scarves have been spotted - but conspicuously not cited by police - at those specific beaches… so as long as she doesn’t look Muslim, she’d probably be fine.

Of course there is! Wearing something that allows armed policemen to order you to strip at gunpoint on a crowded beach is dangerous!

Villeneuve-Loubet’s right-wing mayor, Lionnel Luca, has said swimming in long sleeves and pants is unhygienic

Oh, no! Has anyone told all of those people who wear wetsuits and drysuits when they go diving?
