Shut up Sarah.
We looked from TERF to Xtian fundamentalist, and from fundamentalist to TERF, and from TERF to fundamentalist again: but already it was impossible to say which was which.
Good!
But I am getting really annoyed that everyone, even huffpo, keeps reporting the law like this:
banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
It’s not after six weeks of pregnancy. It’s six weeks after your last period. So potentially just 2 to 4 weeks of pregnancy, depending on your cycle, right? It’s totally fucked up, and even 6 weeks of actual pregnancy is insanely restrictive, the reality is even worse.
OMFG

Clicking through will take you to a misogynist acting out in a two-minute video; he’s on a beach, berating women for the way they’re dressed. Beware, though, of women swearing back most righteously at him.
Asshole!
The wording of the law is that doctors are legally required to check for electrical activity of the heart tube*, which begins after ~6 weeks of pregnancy, and that a physician can’t legally provide an abortion if they don’t check for or if they do find a heart pacemaker rhythm.
Of course since enforcement is intentional done through willfully-ignorant vigilante justice, the medical details of the bill are moot and all abortions at any stage are being attacked
eta: as is pointed out below, there isn’t an actual heart yet at that stage so changed to “heart tube” which is more accurate
Oh, thanks! I thought I recalled seeing one of our trustworthy bbs medical people write about the “time since last period” but I may have misunderstood and didn’t go back to check. And like you say, given the way it’s written, it’s kind of moot.
Both statements are accurate. The wording of the law is consistent with the roughly 6 weeks point, which we measured from the last period. That’s just the (stupid) way we do it because it has always been done that way. The misunderstanding comes from “fetal heart beat bills” which is always how these are referred to, and that is dumb because the cardiac valves (the closing of which gives the “lub-dub” sound of a heartbeat) have not developed yet, and there is no heartbeat to hear, it’s all based on electrical activity, which is silent. All of which, as @Scientist points out, is intentionally moot in this case, because enforcement is up to the most ignorant of the ignoramuses out there.
Here’s the problem: there’s no heart at 6 weeks. No physical heart. What they might pick up is electrical current running through the EMBRYO (not fetus yet). But there is no heart or other organs yet. It’s still just a mess of cells.
Hah! Should have read to the end before posting!
I seem to do this pretty regularly with you, so go ahead and stock up for the inevitable next times:
Thanks for the clarification. One more question, if I may: is the six weeks measuring from the start of the last period, like where the cycle starts, or from the end? I’m assuming the former, but idk anything really about this stuff.
From the start, because that’s the only constant the average person used to have to use as a measurement.
That’s what they always ask at the doc’s office; first day of the last cycle.
Something tells me major film distributors in the US would really save some money by hiring folks like this guy. True projectionists who are willing to do it for free.
Ha, right?
Christ, what an asshole. And probably another one who’s felt emboldened to do shit like that by Trump and all that he’s wrought.
What @anon67050589 and @Melizmatic said. The upshot is that at “6 weeks of pregnancy” you have only had a fertilized egg for about 3 weeks, give or take, and may not realize that you are even late yet. It’s meant to make any abortion illegal, and I suspect they will try to make Plan B illegal as well. It’s only one (very small) step from a Personhood bill.
Another fine example of fundie Christian logic being completely bonkers.
I’ve seen another TikTok from this gentleman. Not gonna link it for obvious reasons but you may search it out if you’re a masochist. He talks about “pornography addiction”. That’s a special fundie term. It basically means being unable to see women as anything but objects. So, cool, we’re on the same page, objectifying women is wrong. But he takes it a step too far and insinuates that it’s the women’s fault somehow for making him do that?
No, fuck that, it’s his own damn fault. He is the one objectifying someone who’s just trying to enjoy a nice day at the beach, and the way they’re dressing isn’t making him do that.
But he’s not against objectifying women because it goes against his moral compass. He’s against it because he fears an actual hell with actual demons with pitchforks and actual lakes of fire for all eternity. For him, but also for those evil evil wimminz that make him objectify them by, I guess, existing.
These concepts are completely unrelatable to me. If his morals are objectionable, that’s on him and not on anyone else. If he wants to not be an asshole, that’s also on him, and more importantly he should do it for himself and not because of some non-existent lake of fire.
This dude’s head would explode if he set foot on a European beach. Anybody feel like crowdsourcing him a ticket?
