This is such a little thing, but the fact that it’s still happening in the 21st century…ugh.
I went googling to find a hugging gif to respond to someone’s post here. Because of the post I was responding to, I wanted it to have a ‘manly’ man and a contrasting female participant, so I searched for “girl and man hugging gif”. Every single one of the responses (at least for the first few pages I checked) was of an adult woman hugging a man around her same age. Not a single child anywhere, and not even an age difference. This is 2019, for heavens sakes.

I just searched for “man hugging little girl gif” and didn’t get a single image of a man hugging a little girl. A lot of “romantic porn”, some regular old porn porn, but not a single gif of a man hugging a little girl.

I’m sure I’ve got some level of “safety” put on my search parameters, so I don’t get porn. But yeah, “girl” still means adult woman in the largest search engine in the world.

I’m actually kind of fascinated by this too. Just typed in “little girl hug grandpa” and got plenty of pictures of actual little girls though so I wonder if “girl” just becomes meaningless when the search term doesn’t imply the relationship based on the masculine?
Ugh… you know the results get worse if you include .gif.
Search engines are so damned messy.
“Man hugs girl” gets me plenty of fatherly scenes. “Man hugs girl . gif” gets me random people hugging (or fighting?) including baby Goku being picked up…

But:

This is a very sad story, but notice what is not said: the article does a form of victim blaming by stressing that the mother should have brought the baby to a hospital or police or fire station – but what if she couldn’t get there, either due to intimidation, injury, or simply lack of transportation options? – and never is there any indication of concern about HER safety. She gave birth; who cares about her humanity now?

I was over on The Root, reading a story on Trump and the Obamas’ book deals, when I found something vaguely amusing in the comments. One poster voiced the common opinion, “I’ll hold my nose and vote for any Democrat in 2020,” citing several male candidates. They got this response:
I was tempted to say, “If all the candidates they won’t vote for are men, wouldn’t that be misandry, not misogyny?” But I doubt it would make a difference, since I’m permagray everywhere on Kinja-- nobody will see it.

Agreed. It’s usually not too much of a problem if I post on i09 or AVClub, and I’ve gotten a reply or two on Splinter. I just don’t post often enough to get permanently ungrayed, and I accept that. But the system is still messed up, especially with all the trollies who are far too visible.

Same deal. I will occasionally post. I generally identify myself as a white guy, and say my peace. Never had a problem, have had a few posts that got a lot of likes.
