Some great signs at the various marches:
For groups like Alliance Defending Freedom, the erosion of abortion rights and trans rights are complementary pathways to building a Christian nation.
And make them pay for the âprivilege.â Childbirth isnât free in this country.
And I know this isnât the main issue, just reminding everyone of the insult piled atop the aggregious injury these fascists are pushing.
I see that this was written before the worstâŚthose yogurt ads starring âThe French Girl.â
I love that reply at the bottom.
This raises some good points, but in one area falls into the same issue (the portrayal of youth, innocence, and fragility) also raised in the article below:
we might learn more about the personal history of this adolescent who wasâfor all of the articulate if confused rhetoric on display in his 180-page screedâbarely out of high school.
no one with even minimal psychotherapeutic sophistication will be surprised if it turns out there is trauma, emotional struggles and/or family dysfunction in his background.
Not at all comfortingâŚ
The Johnny Depp Defamation Trial Will Hurt Abuse Victims for Decades to Come
Folks have literally taken the audio of Amber Heardâs testimony describing Depp physically assaulting her and made videos ridiculing her. Iâve seen creators I respect chasing the trend and making anti-Heard meme videos. Children and teenagers are being aggressively served pro-Depp content on the platform, shaping how an entire generation will think and talk about domestic violence.
In an incredible, sickening article for Vice, Anna Merlan interviewed some of the creators cashing in on the Depp trial. YouTubers, TikTok comedians, and even Etsy sellers are using the Johnny Depp supporters to grow their following and make money. It goes without saying that most if not all of these folks know nothing about domestic violence; they are simply responding to the internetâs massive appetite for content about the case. âAnother pro-Depp trial YouTuber whoâs racked up millions of views said that before the trial, he had exactly 349 subscribers; today, he has more than 12,000,â Merlan wrote. âMid-interview, the YouTuber told me he is 15 years old, and makes videos during the day because heâs homeschooled.â
The trial has turned into a social media circus. Itâs easy to dismiss it as an elaborate celebrity farce, the private mess of a has-been movie star and his C-list ex-wife. I can understand thinking the trial is annoying distraction from the Real Issues of Today â fuck, weâre about to lose abortion access, thereâs a war going on, parents canât find baby formula, and queer people are under attack across the United States.
But the trial sets a legal precedent that will hurt survivors going forward, and the conversation around the trial is already harming victims of domestic violence.
I get that many people donât find either sympathetic figures, but the reality is that abuse is not a joke, whoever is the abuser. And the reality is that the most likely victims of abuse ARE women. so, this is just more fodder for the incel crowd to crow about how we shouldnât care about the abuse of women (or anyone really)âŚ
And social media users in general, from what Iâve been seeing. Very few people seem to think sheâs a victim of his abuse. Most seem to think itâs the opposite.
Yep. His narrative is winning out.
