Why can’t they just leave Britney alone?
Because women exist to be policed, not to live our lives…
For cis and trans women, living life out loud and expressing joy on social media has become an act of resistance in the face of unrelenting online misogyny.
Follow-up.
In a society where women, especially unmarried girls, still have to fight to own a smartphone, would men — and institutional patriarchy — really be willing to share political power?
In September, the Indian government passed a landmark law, under which a third of the seats in the lower house and state assemblies would be reserved for women. Amid the euphoria of celebrating this development, a somewhat cynical question I’ve been thinking about is: Why do only 31% of women own a mobile phone in India compared to over 60% of men? In embryology, a female body is the default. Lacking any hormonal input, a fetus will develop female appearing body parts. There are a number of androgen insensitivity or insufficiency syndromes in which an XY embryo lacks either the ability to produce or respond to androgens. These kids appear to be normal girls until they do not go through puberty. Socially, we may see male as the default, and that certainly seeps into science, as we have seen repeatedly. But for humans, biologically, the default value is female.
The cult-like following of Trump always had an unsettling mix of incel-inflected misogyny, coupled with a homophobia that is somehow also homoerotic. As the Dobbs decision by the Supreme Court shows, Republicans are never content to keep their massive sexual issues to themselves. They are determined to make everyone else suffer, not only by rolling back reproductive rights but by aggressively normalizing sexual and domestic violence. The throughline here is a belief that women aren’t full human beings, but a sexual resource to be put under male control, by violence if necessary. It’s a view they’re getting increasingly less coy about publicly sharing.
