On the card were gruesome images and videos of him killing other women, and she turned him in after what must have been a terrifying week of thinking about it.
It must have been horrible for the woman, especially in that there seemed to be factors at play that prevented her taking the card straight to the law.

Is evidence obtained by stealing it admissible in court? If so, I’m surprised that cops don’t hire petty thieves to collect evidence in cases where they can’t get a warrant?

They were probably trying to suggest that she might have obtained the footage elsewhere and then copied it onto the stolen memory card to frame this suspect. Not an especially plausible-sounding defense but I guess you work with what you’ve got.

Maybe debating whether she would be believed. If she brought it to the cops and they ended up doing nothing but bringing it to the murderer’s attention without actually arresting him, she would be in immediate danger. And cops have an unfortunate history of ignoring women’s pleas for help until it’s too late.
