Another interesting piece of African history is that one of the wealthiest people to have ever existed was the king Mansa Musa

I knew about him, but just last night I was listening to the Fall of Civilizations podcast and learned the interesting story about his predecessor who supposedly (according to Musa) sailed across the Atlantic in the early 1300’s with a fleet of 2000 ships searching for land to the West, never to be seen again. Someone should make a movie about that.

The Block Museum at Northwestern had a fantastic exhibit on the gold trade with Africa during the Middle Ages-most of the gold used in Europe came from Africa at that point.
