It looks like the plane that was hit was also a tail dragger… Otherwise the the vertical stabilizer would have been hit, and it still must be a pretty short stabilizer.

Hmm…Looks like the collision also broke the landing gear of the other plane. You can see it spinning around on a wing and one wheel after the accident. You can also see the sheared off canopy come to rest some distance down the runway…
Briefly, these guys take off together in groups of three – but the forward visibility on these airplanes is pretty much nil when they are on the ground – they’re tailwheel airplanes with a fairly steep resting angle. For races, these guys take off in groups and while I don’t know the particulars of the safety protocols, I think once the group started moving, the guy in the center was comfortable that there wasn’t a hazard. The error was in the airplanes taking off, and once he was rolling the accident was inevitable. Apparently just broke his hand pretty good, but otherwise a surprisingly lucky result.
