I bet there are lawyers fucking clamouring to take Rowling et al to the cleaners
The problem has been that Petunia’s lawyers punch harder than any Olympic boxer.
Being a billionaire does bring certain privileges, like suborning justice, as no lesser person than Peter Thiel pointed out. Mere millionaires don’t have access to that.
Unless they personally know a US Supreme Court justice: they are cheap.
Burnt by the hurried accession of some members of the EU they have new administrative processes including making judges in prospective members justify their income. It really would be worth looking at a cost benefit between Macedonia and US Supreme Court judicial corruption. Greg Palast said : it’s not plant and machinery, it’s not stock and shares, the greatest return on investment is politicians. I wonder if US Supreme Court Justices are the ultimate investment? An RV for control over law. It’s pretty breathtaking.
I haven’t seen any suggestion that Petunia has wielded such power in the UK but tradition has a simple sterling price for a lord or lady ship so who knows?
Rowling is an enthusiastic lawsuit-threatener against people who live in the UK. It’s why there’s relatively light criticism of her in England – she demands abject apologies or she’ll sue. I’m sure she has a long list of American critics she’d like to sue, if Trump ever loosens the libel laws in the U.S.
I’m familiar, there’s a transphobe Irish author (one who mistakes video games for real life when doing his “research”) and those critical of him on Twitter tend to spontaneously post things about how he is not and never was a transphobe and they see the error of their ways. Spontaneously of course.

Would it be impolite of me to suggest that Imane’s critics/attackers each go (at least) a round with her in the ring?
Congratulations Imane Khelif!!!
Lord knows I wouldn’t step into that ring. I’m much too fragile.
I’m so happy for her.
And… fuck these idiots.
Gender is a construct and performative. Sex is a genetic state with more than two possibilities, and the Olympic committee cares about sex not gender. People like Trump and Rowling don’t understand or acknowledge the difference between sex and gender, so I suppose it’s accurate to say that they are questioning either. Still, I think in writing about it we should say they are questioning her sex as that is what would disqualify her from women’s boxing?
Edit to add: sex is also a legal status and the Olympic committee cares about that and surgical status and some other stuff.
Also, personally I think trans women are women. And it’s wrong for anyone to question this athlete’s trans status as well.
More to the point, this athlete is and was never trans. The whole ‘scandal’ was wholly invented by people who stand to gain from fear and bigotry. The real scandal is that this was a topic for more than a fraction of a second.
It’s the only way to be sure.
What a great opening paragraph
UK libel laws are utterly punitive. They only protect the wealthy as the costs of bringing a case quickly run into six and seven figures; and the courts can impose ruinous financial penalties - which is why the rich beat a path to London to sue under our ‘justice’.
It always comes down to the shape of human skulls with these people, doesn’t it?
It’s a pretty good translation. Given the sheer size of the corpora involved, and the straightforwardness of the text, you’d kind of hope it would be.

Barrister [1]Press release: Imane Khelif
After the time of sport comes the time of judgement.
Fresh from winning a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the boxer [2] Imane Khelif decided to take on a new fight: that of justice, dignity, and honour.
Ms Khelif contacted the office which yesterday filed a complaint for acts of aggravated cyber-harassment with the Online Hate Unit of the Paris Prosecutor’s Office.
The criminal investigation will determine who initiated this misogynistic, racist, and sexist campaign, but must also look into those who fed this digital lynching.
The unfair harassment suffered by the boxing champion [3] will remain the biggest stain on these Olympic Games

[1] The French legal system is different from the Anglophone system, and it has its own structure, but if you need a quick and dirty translation of Avocat à la Cour, then “barrister” (UK) or “attorney-at-law” (US), being someone trained in law (= juriste), who has the training to appear in court (avocat), and then more training to be qualified to present the case before a Judge (Avocat à la Cour).
[2] Boxeuse. Not boxeur.
[3] La championne, not le champion. On one level, it’s just how you have to do it in French. On another level, it’s driving home a point.
