While cranial modification was a practice in some of Peru’s ancient cultures, Estrada said it is likely that grave robbers altered the Nazca remains to make it look like they had only three fingers on their hands in a bid to appeal to those who subscribe to the notion of extraterrestrials.
for some reason this was the bit of the linked article i was missing; alongside two fingers per hand. perhaps they saved those to sell as holy relics? no mention of a toe count, hmh

There is so much more to this story. Many medical researchers have confirmed some tridactyl mummies as legit. I expect better from Boing Boing. They are not giving the whole story.
