American books are getting swearier

It seems it’s entirely due to the book ‘Contract Killer’ by William Hoffman and Lake Headley, which was published in 1994 and featured the word 15 times.

This is the only google books search result for ‘cocksucker’ in 1994; 1993 finds two books (with an average of 2.5 cocksuckers) while 1995 finds four books (with an average of 4).

So you’re disappointed that the later draft is in your view better than an earlier draft?

I’d conjecture that even though sex and fecal swear words are on the rise in books, racial slurs are going down. I have no data other than the fact that most people I know avoid swearing in public because they think other people are offended by it. But they avoid racial slurs because those words are just offensive.

Good authors too who once knew better words
Now only use four-letter words
Writing prose.
Anything goes.

It would seem that the trend of novels getting swearier has been going on for a while.
