American Zoomers are faking British accents as a coping mechanism

Here’s a strange new trend amongst Gen-Z Americans. Many are adopting phony British accents…

Strange, perhaps, but new? Back in 1988 this Gen-Xer dated someone who allegedly went to boarding school in Old Blighty & that’s why she spoke with an accent. (Narrator: that wasn’t why.) The year before that, there was a new kid at school who had just moved from England (and by “England,” he meant “Phoenix”). Then there was the person from England at the college party with the friend from… um, er… Norway etc. etc.

Quite.

Also, Robert Louis Stevenson was influenced by his time in Bristol pubs (specifically the Llandoger Trow, which is still a pub) when writing Treasure Island. So some of the earliest fictional depictions of pirates were from Bristol too.

My favourite brizzle accent though is the Bristolian/Jamaican accent, as a local camel will now demonstrate:

Also, “I’m about to get back to work”. Usually accompanied by slapping both knees as you stand up.

i mean, this Gen-Xer did too, but it was 100% because of soaking Monty Python in through my pores. But it’s not the adopting of accents that’s the odd/ridiculous thing here to me, it’s the assertion that it’s done because it’s a coping mechanism, to deal with some uncomfortable situation. get used to it, zoomers! life is all about uncomfortable situations! you’ll get used to it – we all had to.

For me it was Monty Python, Dr. Who, and Benny Hill.

omg yes, you’re right: Doctor Who for sure, and Blake’s 7 as well. I never cared for Benny Hill.

To be honest, the worst parts of Benny Hill went over my head, seeing as I was about 9 or 10 when I first saw it. I just thought it was silly.

oh yeah, me too, i’m sure. also, aside from being so young i was still figuring out i was gay, i just knew the sexual jokes made me uncomfortable and i never found them sexy or funny, so i preferred to just avoid them altogether.
