Pot, meet kettle.

We should add a bunch more highly disparate populations to what we are already not dealing with, because obviously we are doing so very well currently. Not buying what you are selling. Compromising the autonomy of other nations is not a step foreward.

A state is defined and bound by the rules of the U.S. Constitution. Rules that the indigenous people whose descendants comprise the recognized tribal nations were not involved in drafting.

For example, the Navajo Nation is an extremely hard-fought territory spanning portions of four states with a population around 165,000. If the tribal government that controls that area decided to petition to turn their land into a U.S. state (a near impossibility since it would mean changing the borders of four other states, but whatever) then they would no longer have what sovereignty they currently enjoy. Any U.S. citizen could just move in and have an equal say in matters of state governance whether they were tribal members or not.

What little independence the Navajo people still have after centuries of genocide and broken treaties would be gone forever.

Since the Philippines are already their own independent state, why not give American states the option to join them instead? Then there would be the same lack of a border, and the Philippines wouldn’t be put under a government they fought hard to be free from.

Could we join the EU instead?

But we might not pass the entrance exam.

The people of those territories and nations should get to decide their own future, not have it imposed on them. None of the areas you’ve mentioned have had a majority of their peoples ask to become a state of the United States. There is some support in Puerto Rico for statehood, but it is not a majority, and a lot of Puerto Ricans would prefer independence.

As for the Philippines, we fought on the wrong side of a pretty brutal war there that isn’t even taught to most Americans, and then many, many years later, they finally gained independence. Why the fuck would you think they’d want to be a US state?

Actually…not a bad idea. Join the EU. Time for the progressives in the USA to start pushing that Overton back to the left.

The EU is largely based on the idea that people should have more freedom of movement and commerce across neighboring borders.

The best way the US could emulate that example wouldn’t be to join the EU, it would be to further open up the border with Mexico.

As long as we are fancifully redrawing borders, can we at least do Irish Unification and the European Hegemony, so we can do Star Trek?

And for Personal Reasons, Round Nebraska.

China’s economy is melting down (as expected). They are trying to get the most out of their expensive mostly useless boondoggle of a deepwater navy while they still have the money to maintain it.

And that has to do with the Philippines being recolonized… what exactly?

not to speak for @Mangochin , but
i assume that means china can ill afford a costly naval war with the biggest (and most funded) naval power in the world.
