Wasn’t there a thing where the last time one of these came up, that the garish colors were actually part of how they might have looked back in the 15th century?

I was going to say the same. Very Greek in appearance, especially the St. George statue, which I have no issues with, save the lazy eye.

Considering this, it reminds me very much of those paper cutout figures our Sunday School teachers used during lessons (ugh, I cringe at calling them “lessons” now), placing them on feltboard.

Alternatively, the colors are quite reminiscent of certain costumes of Disney characters that so many USians worship with equal fervor.
