I really want one of these things, after seeing a demo of one. But it’s gotta get into the realm of possibility price-wise first.
That would be sad for the people who had declared it the next iphone; but punditry is epistemologically massless so they’ll be able to move on immediately and, if desired, without even comment.
Maybe some day Tim will know what he means when he says “spatial computing”.
I have interpreted in meetings where software developers have discussed implementing app support for this, and my takeaway from these meetings has been that the development would be a major pain in the ass. Also, the demos that I have seen over Zoom made me nauseaus.
So is this going to end up like the NintendoVR Boy? A headache inducing relic from Virtual Reality’s lame past?
I’ve played with the Leap AR and MS’s and Apple’s. AR is something I really want, but I just want to overlay pinouts on circuit boards, and to view technical diagrams. You know, the tech demo stuff we saw successfully work 8 years ago in AR? It feels like they wanted to shove a phone with social media/proprietary store/ads/ into the device and it hasn’t worked so no one gets advancements.
I wish they hadn’t wasted money on the useless front screen. I want to use it for work so much, but 3500 for something that’s not a fully functional, high-end laptop is a hard ask. Even 2k might have been palatable.
Apologies for the slightly tangential curiosity, but why don’t they engineer these efforts closer to half helmets rather than force the user to clamp a band around their head to support the weight of the large goggles? These just seem to just be begging a migraine, whereas something a bit more like helmet/goggles would distribute the weight better, and i dunno… eventually allow scary brain electro-sensing as a “feature”…?
(that “A” could be for ‘Apple’)
I’m curious about how much these are actually being used by the folks who did go ahead and buy them. Years ago there were news reports about how most of the Meta headsets that people had bought ended up just gathering dust after people got bored of them once the novelty wore off. I’m guessing these are the same.
I can see industrial, medical, and research uses for AR. Under our current greedpig capitalist system, though, consumer uses are bound to be exercises in intrusive advertising, pay-for-play games, and walking universal privacy violations.
I think those are the sectors where Microsoft has made something of a success from its HoloLens doohickey.
head shape and/or cost?
I bought a strap that goes across and puts more of the weight on your head for my PSVR2. Much more comfortable.
I think the winning corporate lottery ticket for AR some sort of military application magic. No one really hit that mark, so it’s time to cut losses and look for the next bit of low hanging fruit.
(The latest model of the HoloLens is already 5 years old. Ancient for a tech gadget.)
Oh, I had already forgotten that existed. Less staying power than Google Glass.
Yes, oh funkmaster!
My usual kiss of death for any technology. Sorry for anyone who bought one of these, HD-DVD, Laserdisc…
Lisa II.
Helmets suuuuck. Never fit right, get warm/sweaty underneath, you perceive the weight as uncomfortable after a few mins, and yes, it messes up your hair.
At least with the headband/straps you get a better range of customizability.
