One of the problems with this Apple scheme which has made the rounds of the geekier corners (“There are geekier corners than BoingBoing?” oh yes.), is that Apple proposed to use an initial search method (presumably of an Apple user’s cloud image data) which depended on a (numerical context sensitive) hash of known child pornographic images. So then it became proven possible to alter a non-pornographic image to set off this hash-based detector. Then (for example) one sends these images to a ‘target’ user who admires your pretty sea-side image and saves it to their cloud storage; so then Apple puts them on their “to be watched” list. That is, Apple’s initial screening algorithm was proved to be heavy on the “false positives”. (one poor reference and hackernews … but damnme i can’t find the github with the actual image altering code)

Well, everything is someone’s pornography.

I.E. the responsibility for monitoring for this sort of stuff goes to their “black” ops center, the one that monitors their customers for FBI/CIA/NSA content of interest, no questions asked or answered. Business as usual.

Not later… right now!

Better: you send an actual pornographic image. So when they go through the second review: look! Porn! And it matches the CP hash. So it must be CP.

Exactly. More than likely Apple has been casually browsing the contents of your devices and the cloud for quite some time. They are only bothering to tell us now for a seemingly good cause. This is like the “If you don’t have anything to hide, why aren’t you letting me search your property without a warrant?”
Feature creep will have them reporting suspected copyright violations or political commentary that runs counter to the authoritarians in charge at any given time.
