They mentioned doing just that, but that they couldn’t have it in time for current events. Apple said that was still unacceptable and that they wanted a permanent moderation policy and team in place before allowing them back on.
They were basically given 24 hours on a friday afternoon to saturday to create a corporate policy, put in place a team to support it above and beyond their current workflow and resourcing, (this team would have to , like twitters, be 24/7), and remove all violating posts.
I agree with kicking them off and out, so I’m happy with this result, but introducing the policy isn’t enough. Apple wanted concrete displays of fealty to that policy and not just an empty promise to kick the can down the road.
The advantage of SMS is that Parler can fairly easily switch to a different provider. With google you are locked in to google and they are big enough to drop you when they think you are on the nose.
Google’s framework doesn’t actually route anything through Google. It’s a specification for how to implement a private key pairing process that, combined with a common public key, can be used to generate those 6-digit passcodes indefinitely. Google Authenticator started it, but there are thousands of re-implementations of it at this point. Pretty much every password manager on the planet can do the same job. It’s completely autonomous and doesn’t rely on anything but you and the user’s own device.
A friend of mine figured out where they’ve landed. I’m reluctant to post a direct link having spent a couple of hours in that rabbit hole. It does show a great deal of fracturing but in a way that (I believe) leads to more militancy and more dangerous actions by smaller groups that are harder to keep track of.
A member posted a video of Lindsey Graham being chased down a train platform (it appeared) and harassed for casting a vote to certify. They were saying directly to him that he will be facing this kind of mob for the rest of his life everywhere he goes. While you may have a thought about karma and justice, and I agree this is a monster partially of his own making, it’s also terrifying.

This is actually making me cry. I can’t believe where we are right now. I can’t get anything else done. My dad died less than a year ago, my mom’s stepfather was a Jewish film composer whose friends were dragged through the Red Scare, my dad’s mother had fled her country as a child after mobs like these murdered her grandfather, and my parents both fought injustice, and racism had no place in our home. I only much later “got” that my own activism was not a rebellion but really a product of my upbringing. My dad could see where this Trump thing was going and the 20+ ft flagpole he’d installed long ago has had the US flag at half mast since January 20, 2016.
Well the hate speech laws for Russia kinda lift my spirits. I have been playing a game situated in the WWII era hosted by a Russian company and they have many mechanisms for reporting bad behavior and have banned or suspended people for what in the gaming world would be considered relatively minor infractions… which is good. Like a referee (something my dad also was) blowing the whistle at the earliest violation to set the tone for the rest of the game.
There’s a story a linesman soccer ref told us a few days after my dad passed. They were refereeing in a different region where the parents had been notoriously vitriolic, not only to one another but to their own kids. My dad was head referee. Partway into the game, he ordered all of the parents to leave the premises or he would stop the game. They left. Afterwards, the kids on both teams thanked him and said it was the nicest game they had ever played. I wish we had that kind of a “reset” option for our entire country… one would think a pandemic could do the trick.

edit: you know a third way to get parler installed on android is to bake it into the phone when it is built. Maybe sell the phones online and bundle a bunch of links to fox news or whatever.
