Arizona high school student's racism even offends Arizona

Purposefully done…

But I do not have to adhere to “preferred nomenclature.” As a seasoned black woman, meaning and old black woman that is almost 70 years old, I can tell you that all of the PC BS about what people can and cannot say has lost its usefulness, if it was ever useful. Look, as a black person who as a child was called either “colored or Negro” and suddenly became African American during the 1960’s, the only thing that offends me is that people insist on describing me as a hyphenated American. I, like you I presume, am just an American. It’s offensive when few, black or white, will insist that my ties, MY ties, to Africa are stronger than my ties to the good ole USA even with all its racism and classicism and all those other ‘isms’! My genetic background reaches back a minimum of seven generations and my genetic pool was mixed with all kinds of other races along that long line of generations. So, school has been out for me a long, long time and what makes me angry is people who care more about what should sound nice rather than living nice!

Is it? I don’t think so. If it were like that, it would be OK for me (white) to use the n-word in conversations with my friends. But my impression is that this would cause black friends to question whether I’m really their friend, and if I used it with white friends, it would sound offensive to people who overhear me.
There are of course words in Austrian culture as well that are considered racist/homophobic/whatever-ist slurs. And of course, if you are in the particular group, you will very likely get away with using them, but group members would not normally use the term at all.

As I said, anyone with exposure to American culture should have gotten the message by now. I’m not disputing the fact.
I just wanted to point out that the “if they are saying it, I can say it too” heuristic works pretty well where I’m from. But just as a side note, not to derail things.

That word makes me giggle.

Except there are probably cases where a white person used the term and it not be an issue, at least to that group of friends/family/etc. I meant it’s contextual. We don’t excise the word from films that are attempting to express something in history. Nor do we take it out of books that have the word. Plus, when it’s used in a rap song, that’s also art and it’s generally being used in a number of ways (depending on the song).

The context in this case is young white women, using the word in an offensive way, even if they didn’t mean it aimed at anyone else.

These topics ALWAYS get derailed, so don’t feel like you did anymore than anyone else! Race in America is quite contentious… Plus, I don’t think it’s a derailing, if it’s part of the topic of that word in general. It tends to be the knee jerk reaction lots of white people have whenever this comes up.

And I’m sure the Jews who travel to China don’t go traipsing around the big cities pointing out the swastikas plastered all over the decoration and clutch their chests, gasping, being continuously offended at all the ancient Chinese Nazis…

I agree. And do you feel that I am on-point or off-base when I say that nobody of any color should be using the words nigga or nigger anymore?

None of the rabbis I’ve met who go over there for the big kosher inspection agencies do so. I don’t fuss about the 卍 marks on maps here in Japan either.

Personally I just use the word Belgium. That’s the most offensive word of all.

(I have literally lost my ability to be serious about anything)

Japan recently said they are revamping their maps to remove those.

Evidently this fact hasn’t been widely reported

I was trying to remember the source for my remark, but kept coming up short… hrm… It’s around here somewhere.

Ah yes, here it is.

Sounds like some bureaucrat wanted to sound like efforts were being made to address a non issue.

it can be used to represent the figure 10,000

Oh dear… They’ve confused 卍 with 万, manzi & man

Are you saying that you (presumably white) have a say in how black folks use these words? You should find your nearest black neighbor and tell them!
