I guess there’s no way to prove that the guys with the zip tie cuffs weren’t just there to help organize the AV cables in the Senate Chamber.

Hopefully. Remember you gullible guys being booted- if you wait too long to cut a deal with the authorities- you don’t get to cut a deal.

Be smart - be first to cooperate.

Back in 2009 the elected representatives looked like this:

  • President: Barack Obama D
  • Congress: 257 D / 178 R
  • Senate: 57 D / 41 R

I’m not American, so I don’t have a feel for how this works. I’ve lived most of my adult life in countries with Westminster-style Parliaments (Canada, NZ, Australia). Can someone explain to me how, with numbers like that, a GOP freak-out would matter?

Most legislative activities required a 60% majority in the Senate at the time

From the article: RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said, “My hope is that the Arizona Republican Party will not entertain it. This does nothing to grow our party or put us in a better position to win in 2022.”

Of course. Flake – although no longer a Senator – can still command attention and airtime while singing a pretty anti-Trumpism song, and McCain can go Independent or Democratic.

In times of relative sanity, it’s a good feature.

I can’t without exploding into a diatribe about fecklessness, cowardice, self-delusion and “democratic” politicians whose only purpose is to sabotage the party.

As a wise man once said, “Elections have consequences.” But some Democrats disagree.

It would accelerate that process to seize the RNC’s funds through civil asset forfeiture. We’ve had that shitty law for way too long; it’s about time that it actually be put to good use.

Apparently republican grumbling did matter, because in the next election, the Republicans took the House, and almost took the Senate.

Perhaps the moral should be, “when you have power, use it.”

Bummer that the article doesn’t say what the consequences of censuring would actually be. If it’s basically just a stern, “We strongly object to what you did!”, well, I guess that’d be par for the course when it comes to how Dems tend to fight back.

That’s essentially all censure is. In the House the person in question also has to stand in the time-out box while the Speaker of the House reads a note explaining what bad thing they did and how they should feel so very ashamed.

That’s why the Republicans who said Congress should have censured Trump instead of impeaching were so incredibly far off the mark. Censure is just a form of public shaming, so it has no effect on anyone who is incapable of experiencing shame.
