I’m sort of torn. On the one hand, I would like asshole drivers to be told that they were assholes if there is evidence, regardless whether that came from a speedcamera, a dashcam or a person on the street. I probably don’t agree with the fine.
On the other hand, encouraging the public to submit video that the Police act on is bound to end badly.
This is Australia though, the Police hand out fines and demerit points like candy so I am not surprised they are doing this.
Despite the “snitches get stitches” attitude on display, I do wish I could use photo or video of cars parked in the segregated bike lane [1]. My experience of this locally is that it has to be the local council’s person, and they only work 9-5 M-F.
If the law says “no parking”, but the enforcement is “business hours”, then at best it’s “free parking outside of business hours”.
We like dunking on “a fine is just the cost of doing business” when levied at megacorps - in other domains we acknowledge that a rule with no enforcement is no rule.
NB: these spaces are “do not park except in an emergency” in the UK. Emergency should include “you have your hazard lights on”. ↩︎
