Ayn Rand supercharged the anti-Communist witch-hunt in Hollywood, in which the FBI classified "It's a Wonderful Life" as secret Communist propaganda

The problem with academia is its lack of introspection and intellectual honesty?

Good lord.

That’s totally what some people think, that we are garbage people working to subvert American values.

VLIW antedates 1999. I’ve long ago disposed of my old copies of Computer Design so I can’t date it.

mostly referring to Itanium, there.

but, yeah

has a bit of a history.

Can we still refer to her as “She Who Shall Not be Named”, “The Unspeakable Horror” or “Dinesh D’Souza’s F–kbuddy”?

Okay I’ll say this as a former Randite, there’s nothing introspective about Ayn Rand’s works. I think the only story she’s written that came close to that is Anthem (but anyone can write about cognitive collectivism and its effects IMO if you come from a cult or whatever like the JWs). She’s really not a deep thinker by any stretch. If you want DEEP THINKING try Allen North Whitehead’s Process and Reality. Let’s see if you don’t wind up with a bad case of “what did I just read” after a chapter or two of that text.

Absolutely! The second one particularly resonates with me!

Or Principia Mathematica, in conjunction with Russell. The book that persuaded me to do natural sciences rather than maths.

The Undead that refuses to die, so quite relevant to Randianism then.

We actually had a test sample with a Transmeta VLIW processor. Truly a solution seeking, very slowly, for a problem.

If academics are not working to subvert the generally held prejudices of society, what good are they? We have plenty of people promoting them.

Garbage people - does that mean you have to remove the intellectual rubbish and take it to the dump?

Apparently as a small child I told my parents that the most important people in the world had to be teachers and garbage men*, because without them we’d all be surrounded by stupid people and knee-deep in our own garbage.

I’ve been seizing every opportunity to quote myself ever since!

* in the USA, a “garbage man” is someone who comes to your house and takes away your trash for a monthly fee. It’s not a derogatory term in my area.

They were called dustmen in the part of the UK i grew up in. I also guess that council tax kind of counts as a monthly fee.

I guess the b*tch doesn’t realize that INDEPENDENTS and liberals ALSO have guns
and know how to use them… probably better than that dopey bitch

Ironically, the real campaign against academics and especially the humanities, has come at a time when there are more women of all races/ethnicities and people of color of any gender earning PhDs. Coincidence?

They also want to eat and have a roof over their heads. Amazingly, we need the same things from maslow’s hierarchy of needs as the rest of humanity.

It means that we are not valued because what we do is no longer valued. History, gender studies, philosophy, or literature isn’t seen as important because a proper study of both opens up much more complicated ways of thinking about or understanding the world that don’t always give you easy answers about the world. But the fox news watchers of the world have been told that the humanities are marxist, anti-American indoctrination of white male hating. Hence, no matter what our political views or our work, we’re garbage people who most certainly shouldn’t “cheat” the tax payers by having a cushy job where we can do and say whatever we want with no consequences - none of which is the case. I provide a service to the community and I get paid shit to do it, thanks in part to less money going into higher education here.

More people need to remember that, on both counts.

By “garbage people” I don’t mean people who provide that valuable service, but people are worth less than garbage. And yes, I’m fairly certain that most people who think we don’t need liberal arts at all see me has a person worth less than garbage.
