I think the kid was just reacting to the mothers voice. Either that or dad was off camera tearing the child’s favorite teddy limb from limb.
If anyone’s still interested, Katy Waldman over at Slate asked a couple of experts what they thought about the baby’s emotional state. FWIW, neither thought the baby was saying “Ow, please stop the horror, yer killing me, mom.”
They seem to think the child may be reacting with empathy to the sadness in the mother’s voice. Neither thought the tears were the result of “personal distress” of the baby’s own.
