Some years ago a Chinese wannabe pop singer convinced BBC local radio in Oxford (IIRC) that she was a huge star in China. She had some gold discs made up with her name and rented a limo for the day, and that was enough.
The twist was that she was from an ethnic minority in China. If she sang in her people’s language she could have had a stab at becoming a local star in her home region.
