Are they saying that gabber version of Ode To Joy that I heard 20 years ago was the right speed?

I seem to remember reading something about this. Apparently this was due to the fact that it took some time for the musical world and the makers of metronomes to agree on some sort of standard for
1.) just how long β€œone bar” actually lasts
2.) how this is marked on a metronome
This was before organisations that set standards or IP rights, so anyone making metronomes pretty much made them to their own standards.

A somewhat related subject: the instruments used today are not what orchestras used say 250 years ago, i.e. at the time when a particular piece of music was composed. As a general rule, orchestras got a lot louder over time.
