They already have, most mainlanders already believe the state-run media’s narrative that this was all started by foreign instigators from the CIA and such.
And why wouldn’t they? It’s the only explanation that makes sense from their point of view (and the only one most have been allowed to hear).

Based on the way people talk about Tiananmen Square, I think people know story presented in the media is wrong, but they know better than to question it.

The really weird thing is the people elsewhere, who I’ve seen buying the Chinese govt’s line about CIA involvement and such without the slightest of hesitation or fact-checking or consideration that maybe Beijing isn’t to be uniformly trusted on these issues. I know all too many people still have it fixed on their brains that Russia’s always good and America is always bad, but I didn’t think there would be many pro-Xi “tankies” these days!

If you’re in Hong Kong as the locals, you would be wondering why would the pro-CCP people would completely trust the government, believe about the CIA involvement, etc,.
BUT would not trust the government about milk powder, handling local laws,etc,.
