Funny how the so-called “Longtermist” movement of philanthropy never funds restorative justice lawsuits for future generations affected by the fossil fuel industry’s malfeasance. It’s almost as if their real priority isn’t tomorrow’s humans but rather today’s billionaires…
I’m very glad this is getting attention, but the entire petroleum industry knew with a high degree of certainty as early as 1968.
Oh, wait, make that 1946.
(I didn’t actually know about the 1946 one until now)
Tomorrow is too short-term for longtermists.
10k years? Climate change may wipe out a good bit of population in less than 100. In less than a decade we have seen computer / AI progress to the point of producing realistically “fake” photos of real people. In another 100 years you may just be living in a virtual world completely tailored to you. Or maybe we have destroyed everything to the point we are all farmers again with only the most basic of tech. Or Hunger Games, maybe Mad Max?
How about we narrow that aim down to 10 years, maybe 50 for those really big goals (and break that down to 10 year targets)…
But in the really long term, we’ll have lots of planets, and wrecking one will be no big deal. /s
