apparently criminalizing psychotic breaks in an institutional setting is a real thing in parts of the states.

My second to last home, the bank appraisal came in well below the contracted price and yet ONE day later, there was a letter from the IRS stating that there must be shenanigans going on because there’s no way the house should sell for so little. I faxed the IRS letter to the bank officer. They decided to quietly up the appraisal to cover the purchase price. This is the reality of the south side of Chicago:

“Mr. Brown’s death, while tragic, was justified because Mr. Brown’s actions caused three deputies to reasonably believe it was necessary to use deadly force to protect themselves and others,”
“I don’t care what direction you’re going – forward, backwards, sideways. I don’t care if you’re stationary”
-District attorney Andrew Womble

Just openly saying murder is ok if deputies decide to shoot someone sitting still in a car or driving away from them. Please let this asshole accidently back his car up too close to local deputies

And coming from the same asshole, after saying that the investigative report he based his decision on will not be released to the public, he says this shit. Fuck this guy so much

“I know that a lack of accurate information is frustrating to the public and media that operate on a 24-hour news cycle, but in this age of instant media and the impulse to immediately form an opinion, I’m asking that as we move forward we remind ourselves that in these cases we should not jump to conclusions until all the facts are out”

someone black, of course.

they found a bullet from the cops in the neighbor’s house –
but, sure: they were protecting the public.

and just to rub it in, when asked what recourse the public has womble said only “the ballot box”.

those cops can act with complete impunity and they know it. which is why murdering a person in car when there were many many other options seemed like just another day on the job to them.

But, systemic racism is a Democrat myth, right? White Americans would never do such a thing! (/s)
Seriously, it’s good to see some recognition, but a century later and offering nothing in the way of restitution is not sufficient. It does, however, beat the hell out of just continuing to pretent it never happened.

I’m honestly surprised they applauded at all.

Between this and Silent Sam, the UNC Board of Trustees has shown itself to be a group of real assholes that has no real interest in good governance of one of the premier public institutions in the US.

it apparently took three tries for the victims to get the cops to actually investigate. if i’m reading the article right, they refused the first two times.

the judge also apparently called in a false 911 call about it all, saying that protestors were in the street. meanwhile his truck was clearly not on the road.
