Black Lives Matter. Still

From the area of, “yes, and…” let us not forget that for every person wrongfully incarcerated like this, it means the true culprit is still out there…a travesty of justice on multiple fronts.

dear god. facing 51 charges and 1000 years with this as the case?

No one was actually hurt in the drive-by, and cell phone evidence revealed he was seven and half miles away from the area.

The primary evidence was an alleged connection to the Crips and one of the victims saying they saw someone who looked like him. Though the witness ultimately recanted.

Judge mulls defense request to allow Ahmaud Arbery’s criminal and mental history into trial - ABC News (go.com)

Obviously, if he has not been an angel, then they were justified in hunting him down and shooting him. Just as others would justified in doing the same to them? I mean, obviously, they are no angels either. Who are we kidding, they are white, so the angel standard does not apply.

I’m gonna cross-post this in the transphobia thread, too.

Black homeowner had a white friend stand in for third appraisal. Her home value doubled.

Calling all white allies?

“I staged my home to look as ethnically neutral as possible,” she said.

By that, she means “white” of course.

I’ve sold a house three times. It’s an old problem. My first real estate agent told me exactly what depersonalize means in that business, and I appreciated her candor. Basically, buyers shouldn’t be able to determine anything significant about the seller. The goal is to get them to picture themselves in your place.

That being said, the racism adds an extra challenge for Black buyers and sellers. For my last move, I had to hide multiple times. Once, my front door was open when I noticed a car slowing down to look at the property because of the sign on the lawn. I ducked out of sight until they were gone. After that, I kept the door closed and used the intercom to deal with unexpected looky-loos. I referred them to my agent, and stayed where they could not see me. If people were hanging around outside, that meant I was stuck inside.

The worst thing was the house exits both led to the front drive. There was no way to leave without being noticed. Prospective buyers might arrive early, so I started going out 90 minutes before appointments because of the times groups arrived an hour ahead of time. Twice I wound up trapped in a locked room with my cat during their tours. That meant sitting for an hour, bent over to avoid being seen through the window, and avoiding making noise while trying to keep an animal calm. Both kids and adults tried to open the locked door to the room multiple times*, and it was terrible.

* I had a small bedroom/office locked and labeled as a Pet Area, with pictures of the interior on the sign to prevent my cat from being harassed or accidentally released. Despite the locked door and no indication of what kind of animal was on the other side, people would not stop trying to open it. :unamused: For serious second viewings, I took the cat out to wait in the car with me, which added another layer of de-catification and transport work to the process. Never again.

I just have to wonder how this shit is still happening. It’s not like it hasn’t made news previously, causing white people to be embarrassed. And isn’t white embarrassment the real tragedy?

(Not enough coffee this morning, maybe, but I just noticed that “embarrassed” contains “bare assed,” which pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?)

We really need to make sure police are not the first responders in mental health situations…

This part of the article highlights the reason we’ll probably be seeing more efforts to not only prevent Black history from being taught in schools, but also to limit or eliminate history classes in general:

Tim Madigan, who wrote his own assessment of what happened to Greenwood, The Burning: The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921, has praised Ellsworth’s undertaking, stating: “I believe that the path of true racial reconciliation runs through millions of American whites, whose hearts would be changed if they only knew our history.

I don’t understand how he went directly from a mental health facility to police custody for something he did in the mental health facility. I don’t see how “starting a fight” in a mental health hospital could possibly be the fault of the patient or that there would be any reason to release him to the police without discharging him as being mentally competent.

This case seems like the system decided to just execute this man without the benefit of trial because he was difficult to deal with and black. The mental health hospital apparently let this person die because of their own failings.

As @anon61221983 always says, historians are very dangerous people. That is, when she isn’t saying “moist.” Which is, to be honest, a lot of the time!
