Black Lives Matter. Still

As a white person whose ancestors never owned slaves, fuck that noise. A history of plantations is a history of slavery.

This comment is so well written, I felt it was worth sharing here:

White Supremacy is, in its simplest terms, a weapon. It is brandished and wielded for the sole purpose assuaging fear by way of an almost sociopathic, dehumanizing brand of violence. The rub is that despite the fact that it is obviously a jagged club, and even though a casual inspection belies the fact that it is solely an implement of inflicting damage on others, it is passed off as a tool by those that would use it against me.

ā€œItā€™s not racism,ā€ they protest, ā€œItā€™s ā€˜economic anxiety.ā€™ā€ I make less per dollar than a white man with all other things being equal, much less when taking into account the exclusionary nature of economic mobility for minorities in general. When will my anxiety be considered?

ā€œItā€™s not racism, itā€™s because they are protecting their families, culture, or history.ā€ I am forever severed from my ancestors. My people were stolen, beaten, raped, bought and sold. Their stories have been lost in their victimization, and even if I were to go to Africa (where, on that vast continent, do I begin) I am so removed from them there that it is difficult to relate. Meanwhile, here my people can be extinguished on a whim, and then blamed for it because what is grievous injury without callous, thoughtless insult.

ā€œIts not racism, your people are just pre-disposed to violence and wreak near constant havoc in your wake. Chicago, Detroit, gang-bangers and thugsā€¦ā€ The history and culture of violence of white people is as pervasive as it has ever been. Terrorists in America have been and continue to be nearly all white. White people havenā€™t been getting snatched up by roving gangs of black lynch mobs. White people have not been getting pigeon-holed into the worst areas by the machinations of Machiavellian Blacks and then left to rot. This country was sown in the crushed bones of the natives. Itā€™s American Dream sprouted up from that morbid top soil only to be slaked by the blood of more innocents. When the killing fields needed more room to graze cash cows (Mos Def) they expanded westward to continue their atrocities.

White supremacy is a gnarled cudgel. It is a mark of inhumanity and savagery that denotes that the sheer cowardice that comes from those whole shamelessly hoard power and still lust for more. It masquerades as a tool, and in that illusion it finds more uses than simply being brought down on oneā€™s skull, or swung wildly with wanton malice. It is also used to prod one into a path that would keep the steady pace to eventual slaughter. It can scrape the flesh from bone to prolong suffering or make an example. If the user is skilled enough, they can subtly draw just enough blood to maintain the dissonance of utility, or simply sling it across the shoulders as a looming menace and a threat that any dissent will be paid for by our bodies.

Your white supremacy is naked contemptuous evil couched in a lie. The white supremacist wishes that their view of the world be seen as correct and so they will swallow their own lie so that they remain insulated from their own hatred. How long before they too are found not white enough to be spared its pain?

I immediately got an image of ā€œLucilleā€, the barbed-wire-wrapped baseball bat that Negan, the psychopath in The Walking Dead, used to torture and kill.

That imagery is not wrong.

As a white person with at least some ancestors who certainly owned slaves in a very well documented way, fuck that noise still. The history there is slavery and plantations are an aspect of the history of slavery. Visiting a plantation and expecting not to hear about slavery is a lot like going to Auschwitz and expecting not to hear about the Holocaust.

Iā€™ve never understood that ā€œmy ancestors never owned slavesā€ line. Why does that change anything? Itā€™s like saying that people are capable of unbelievable cruelty to their fellow man, but hey, my shit donā€™t stink. And if your shit really donā€™t stink, congrats, itā€™s not about you, so stop making it about you.

Butā€¦ butā€¦ Iā€™m 1/16 German and Iā€™m sick and tired of getting lectured about how Iā€™m responsible for this! All I wanted to do was have a fun vacation and see where the lampshades were made!

I was going to post this discovery in the 2D Art thread, but I think maybe it belongs here, too.

I knew immediately what the state would be. As the article points out, itā€™s pretty obvious why itā€™s NOT called ā€œrat infestedā€ or a ā€œshitholeā€ despite all the killing:
