Not to mention that amazing 4-4 draw against a Wehrmacht team which allowed many Allied POWs to escape the odious grip of the Nazis.

Here’s a clip from Pele’s role in the truly weird World War II POW drama “Victory” (aka “Escape to Victory”).

I’m not a soccer fan, but, as someone who grew up in the 60,s and 70’s, I remember Pelé. He was inspirational. RIP, Pelé.

One of my uncles (who very much is a soccer fan) grew up in the same small Brazilian town as Pele, and definitely found him to be inspirational. He ended up becoming a painter and about 15 years ago he had the extraordinary opportunity to paint the official portrait for the Pele museum. During the sitting for the portrait Pele was gracious enough to dribble the ball a little with my uncle and his family. Sounds like he was a really great guy.
