I remember seeing Alex Niño use a brush pen at a comics convention in the DC area in the 1970s. I was fascinated by it but no one at the art supply stores where I asked about them knew what I was talking about. I should have asked him while he was making the drawing for me, but I didn’t think they would be that hard to find.
My guess at the time was that it was a calligraphy brush - from Japan, most probably, but I couldn’t find one anywhere. These days the Internet makes learning about, finding, and buying all kinds of things so much easier.
