Why is the school building designed as abandoned? Wouldn’t it be more enjoyable if it was in operating state and full of teachers?

My six-year-old will be all over this. But see, he has a fundamental dislike of school as an institution, which is sometimes projected as a dislike of the physical plant itself.
At the same time, he’s a sweet and sensitive boy who likes his teachers and would wish no harm to befall them.
