The author of the paper was mostly looking at cute fuzzy animal death directly caused by farm equipment. I myself have killed some wildlife with my oh-so-earth-friendly electric tractor, but mostly only snakes and insects. It’s just a little garden tractor. (But now that I have a sickle bar on it, I’m more likely to do farmer-scale damage. That thing could take your hand off at the wrist without even slowing down much. I plan to be extra vigilant, because it already grieves me when I kill snakes and dobson flies.) Davis (the author of the paper) had an axe to grind, but he made a number of valid points, and I recommend @Comrade’s post above in which he critiques the paper.
Personally I am more appalled by the way we’ve engineered cruelty into our food supply than I am by bullfighters, but I figure spectators at a bullfighting event are fair game for bulls, and I applaud the bull for keepin’ it real for them.
