The ARB is the Air Resources Board. It is not California’s version of EPA,. California has Cal EPA . All NEW engines have the same requirements for emissions. I have talked to mechanics These manufactures are having both computer and mechanical problems with the new engines.

Growers/non dealer mechanics cannot get access to the diagnostic tools. Not just JD diagnostic tools, but Case, New Holland, Kubota. You can replace a broken fan belt in your tractor, but if the engine was shut down by the computer due to overheating, you will have to have a dealer service tech come out and reset the computer. These engines are completely computer controlled to maximize engine emission reduction. Many growers are happy with the performance of their older equipment. The ARB is requiring them to retire their older equipment.

That is true, but they are helping the farmers by assisting them with grants and loans.

This is a much needed program particularly for the people living in the San Joaquin Valley, which has the most pollutants in the state. I grew up there and I’ve seen the air quality dramatically decrease over the last four decades. However, assigning blame to the ARB for what John Deere is doing is disingenuous. Even without the environmental policies, farmers will always need to upgrade equipment. Manufacturers would still be locking farmers out of the right to repair.
