Thats why no-one uses it anymore. “Nazi” is the preferred slur now (most often by those living in the newly budding police state USA):
Why stop there? Call them the City Sports Team #177. That probably won’t offend anybody!
Um. “Bastard” has a very specific meaning and so does “bitch”. A bitch is a female dog. Thus the term would be more offensive to someone from an Islamic culture (to whom dogs are unclean) than someone from a culture that holds dogs in high esteem, but in any case nobody is ever going to literally think you are saying a woman is a canine and not a human being. Bastard is different.
Just as other countries once stamped birth certificates with the word JEW, in the USA, it was once commonplace for the birth certificates of the children of unwed mothers to be stamped “BASTARD” or “ILLEGITIMATE”. This made it more difficult for “fallen women” and rape victims to move away and start new lives posing as widows, and made it certain that such people would be easily identified by teachers, doctors and law enforcement. There are thousands of people alive today with birth certificates marked in this way, or in more subtle but still obvious ways.
I am the descendant of a bastard who was a good and righteous man; as part of a family that practices adoption I have bastard children, bastard nieces and bastard nephews whom I love. I won’t attack you if you use the word bastard as a slur, just as I won’t flip out if you ask me about my child’s “real” parents when you notice our racial differences. And I’m trying to raise kids who can cope with such things, gracefully. But I figured you ought to know what you’re doing, so that you can be aware that sometimes people feel really bad when they hear that word used that way. Like if you say “Jesus, what a bastard that guy is” in the presence of a woman who is the parent or child of a bastard, maybe she feels like you’re equating some nasty prick with someone she loves. But she’s unlikely to say anything, she’s just going to feel bad and maybe look on you with disfavor.
But in any case, calling a man a bastard is not equivalent to calling a woman a bitch, see?
“Indians” is not a race, either, nor “Caucasian” (don’t know what that even is). Welcome to the 21st century, US of A, your whole concept of human races as used in your everyday lives and politics is taken from anthropological theories that have been proven outdated for what now, a century?
That was my point. There isn’t an anti-male slur that carries the same sting as “bitch” just as there isn’t an anti-white slur that carries the same sting as “n****r.” Even “son-of-a-bitch” is really a slur against the guy’s mom.
Do you honestly not see how racist it is for you to do that? We’ve been round this block before. The answer to racism is not retaliation in kind. I’m a white guy who grew up in a middle class suburb and I resent being stigmatized, even in this backhanded fashion, solely because of the color of my skin and my place of origin.
As one middle-class white guy to another: please don’t complain about how much “racism” we suffer in this country. It’s like complaining about how paraplegic people get all the best parking spaces.
You aren’t getting anything I’m saying today.
Probably my fault.
I give up.
Gonna roll my bitch ass outa here.
I’m not stigmatizing adamcoe solely because he’s a suburban white guy. Still, it’s not so surprising to read what he wrote, given that he’s a middle class suburban white guy. Surely you would agree (at least if you thought about it for awhile) that our status and geographical location can be enormous shaping influences on us, instilling in us certain tendencies? Not all of any discernible sort or type enact socially induced tendencies, but it’s not surprising when they do, and in this case, when their contact with Indians/Native Americans comes solely through subtly racist media imagery. tl;dr, I don’t judge people solely on the basis of who they are, but I’m also not surprised when certain kinds of people say and do certain things.
I’m not sure I am either. There 's nothing racist about pointing out that the reason they see no point in getting rid of a racist caricature as a sports mascot is because they don’t have to live with racism.
Yeah…we already do that.
When we are being more specific, It’s broken down to geographic areas such as “East Asians”, “South Asians”, "South East Asians"etc.
I just had (am having?) the strangest argument on the twitters with some guy who just doesn’t see the racism. I find it so strange, when faced with an obvious example of racism, that they don’t/won’t see it. I get accused of falling for liberal hysteria. So sad.
Wow. Did I say all that? Really?
There are indeed varying opinions as to the intent of that site and multiple passionate readings of its intent. And now, you can have your very own opinion!
In other news - no, I do not expect anything I might say to end regionalism, any more than I have the power to convince anyone to indulge in it who didn’t before.
Stay and argue as long as you like. I’m going to go feed a hungry person now.
Do you know a lot of Native Americans offended by a MLB team being named the Indians?
It’s a landlocked country between Thailand and Vietnam!
I would consider it to be genocide, especially if spreading smallpox is considered genocide (that figures in to the “genocide” high-end numbers, btw.) There was plenty of food, and plenty of land, but it was all “owned” by England, leaving Irish farmers to a small allotment of land. Potatoes are a natural choice; they’re packed with most of what you need to survive. Unfortunately, as anyone knows who grows potatoes, you can’t grow potatoes in the same spot all the time, as they’ll get the blight and turn to black mush.
And that’s what happened. And rather than help out, England took the food.
The Chocktaw, the first tribe to be sent on the Trail of Tears, learned of the famine and the reasons why the Irish were dying. This was a mere 16 years after their forced relocation to Oklahoma, bear in mind; having said that, they gave all they could. They have a great humanitarian history, too, aside from that. http://www.choctawnation.com/history/choctaw-nation-history/choctaws-helped-starving-irish-in-1847-this-act-shaped-tribal-culture/
My Dad is one documented ancestor away from joining the tribe; I’m a little jealous of his genetic heritage, too. He can go for hours in the sun with his skin staying reddish-brown all summer; me, I have too much Northern European in me, and have pasty skin and red hair, so of course I burn within minutes.
“Native peoples remain more likely than any other race to experience crimes at the hands of a person from another race. Native youth experience the highest rates of suicide among young people. With studies showing that negative stereotypes and harmful “Indian” sports mascots are known to play a role in exacerbating racial inequity and perpetuating feelings of inadequacy among Native youth, it is vital that all institutions—including professional sports franchises—re-evaluate their role in capitalizing on these stereotypes.”
ENDING THE LEGACY OF RACISM IN SPORTS & THE ERA OF HARMFUL “INDIAN” SPORTS MASCOTS
National Congress of American Indians | October 2013
How about we just don’t use any type of human mascot because that’s weird and leads to creepy mascot suits and oh god nightmares forever
And yours is? After all, you must’ve had a reason for recommending it . . .
