Carp Diem - Learning to Fish

So, did you do any clamming on your camping trip? Did you post a report? Did I miss it?

No clamming :frowning: turns out when there have been rains, no clamming. But all in all, still a wonderful camping trip. Here’s the view from our site around high tide:

And around low tide:

And I had a new watercolor book so challenged myself to paint some little plant from around the site each morning:

Hoping to go out fishing again this weekend, though.

Timely, though, too.
I’m heading down south in February (to South Carolina, Myrtle Beach area) and am tempted to try fishing from the pier. I’ve never salt-water fished, or fished from a pier. I know I’ll need to wash my rig well to avoid corrosion, but any and all other tips are welcome!

Look up some live bait rigs for saltwater. They may have rental gear, so you don’t have to risk corrosion on your own gear.

Everything eats shrimp.

ETA: Looks like the pier at Myrtle Beach State Park rents rods, and the rod rental comes with your pier fishing day pass! Just be careful, because the pass is only good on the pier; if you go out onto the beach and fish you need a SC saltwater fishing license.

Fishing rod rentals: Fishing rods can be rented from the pier gift shop for $25/day. A refundable $25 deposit is required for each rod rented. Each rod rented comes with one (1) daily fishing pass. Rods must be returned an hour before the pier gift shop closes.

Sweet, thanks for the leads!
It would be way more convenient to rent stuff down there than try to bring it with me.
It’s still a while off, but I’m so looking forward to this trip. Fishing and potentially “bringing home the bacon” adds a whole extra layer of anticipation.

I’m happy to see this thread is once again alive. I’ve been building a fishing rod, which is mostly just wrapping thread around a rod blank. I’m enjoying it a lot, though (way more than fly tying).

I don’t really do a lot of rodmaking these days, but it is great fun and very rewarding.

If you don’t already have it in the plan, I can’t recommend enough putting alignment dots at the ferrules to help with alignment when you put the rod together. It’s not as big of a deal with 2-piece rods, but when you get to 4+piece rods it’s so convenient.

I’ve been enjoying the whole process. I had a couple of fairly frustrating moments, but that’s to be expected.

I thought about adding the dots, but they totally don’t line up on the one rod I have with them on it. I’m so used to ignoring them I probably wouldn’t use them.

Also, this is an 8wt I’m building. When it’s done, it’ll be my pike/bass/walleye rod.
