I think its is interesting that this nuclear test basically “gave birth” to Godzilla. Honda stated that it was much inspired by the Lucky Dragon No. 5 incident.

I met a former US sailor once who said he was at one of the bikini atoll tests. He said they had been aboard a ship stationed too close to a blast that was miscalculated in size. He had been below decks but said that everybody, above decks and below was irradiated. Not sure what the death toll was but over time pretty much everybody got various cancers. They were also discharged from the navy, warned that the details were top secret, and were pretty much disowned by the government.
