Chastity belts were a joke, then a metaphor, then a hoax

The only remotely plausible scenario I’ve ever heard is that chastity belts were worn to protect against rape while a woman’s husband was away. The woman had possession of the key. Of course, if chastity belts never actually existed, that idea is no more relevant than any other.

Okay, maybe not that selective. Also I now want a giant mechanical dinosaur.

I see them used far more often for male anatomy than otherwise. There’s actually an amazing variety of such devices available. You can even find them on Amazon, but apparently those are mostly cheap Chinese copies using cheaper materials, etc.
