I can’t believe Every Breath You Take came out almost forty years ago. Ugh. Father Time is a son of a gun.

Came for “Cake by the Ocean”, left disappointed.

Well, that was grim.

I figured as much: I’m the type who counts Tom Waits’ Goin’ Out West as The Summer Tune of 1992.

I’m goin’ out west
Where the wind blows tall
'Cause Tony Franciosa
Used to date my ma
They got some money out there
They’re giving it away
I’m gonna do what I want
And I’m gonna get paid
Do what I want
And I’m gonna get paid

Little brown sausages
Lying in the sand
I ain’t no extra baby
I’m a leading man
Well my parole officer
Will be proud of me
With my Olds 88
And the devil on a leash
My Olds 88
And the devil on a leash

I know karate, Voodoo too
I’m gonna make myself available to you
I don’t need no makeup
I got real scars
I got hair on my chest
I look good without a shirt

Well I don’t lose my composure
In a high speed chase
Well my friends think I’m ugly
I got a masculine face
I got some dragstrip courage
I can really drive a bed
I’m gonna change my name
To Hannibal
Or maybe just Rex
Change my name to Hannibal
Or maybe just Rex…

I’m gonna drive all night
Get some speed
I’m gonna wait for the sun
To shine down on me
I cut a hole in my roof
Shape of a heart

And I’m goin’ out west
Where they’ll appreciate me
I’m goin’ out west
Where they’ll appreciate me
I’m goin’ out west
Where they’ll appreciate me
I’m goin’ out west
Where they’ll appreciate me
Goin’ out west
Goin’ out west

1980 - Jessie’s Girl Rick Springfield.

One of my earliest musical memories is from when he played guitar in local band Zoot, here with their proto-metal Eleanor Rigby.

Much better.

The definitive song about summer hits.

Ah, a few nights in '92 involved staggering back from the pub bellowing out “I know karate, and voodoo too!”

ETA: also: “Black Wings” is an excellent song for the “road trip across the desert” mix.

ETA: My last mutual crush was ensnared with a medley of Tom Waits songs. I always sing Mr Waits’ works in almost as deep and gravelly a voice as he, which is a rather strange sound to issue from a five foot one strawberry blonde female. It began when we discovered that one of several folks w/whom my pal Chris and I were having a pleasant chat wasn’t hip to Mr Waits. He began googling him like mad as soon as I got to the 2nd song. Several songs were involved in the medley, but I only remember finishing up with The Piano Has Been Drinking, and Pasties and a G-String. Everyone cracked up, and the Tom Waits fans among us were extra amused to learn my mom called him The Irish Anti-Tenor. My crush quickly enquired whether Chris was my BF, which made us both laugh. I explained my BF was off playing bass at a gig at another bar. He moved in closely, and said, “He’s an idiot to let you go anywhere without him!”

Don’t Go Breaking My Heart is a banger. I will not be taking questions on this.

List needs Gangnam Style.

While I don’t disagree that it fits, it’s actually a piss-take on the Christmas (s)hit songs. In particular Black Lace - Agadoo - YouTube (apologies for inflicting that on people)

Also insert standard response “All songs that came out when I was young are great and everything released since is crap”

Agadoo was a summer holiday song, it hit the charts in August. You’re the first I’ve heard describe the Spitting Image song as a parody of Christmas fare.

I had somehow conflated The Chicken Song with The Christmas Singles in my brain.

I offer no excuse other than it’s been 30+ years since The Chicken Song came out
